GodModding and Power-Playing
This is a problem which seems to be rather frequent on RP sites, and, thus fore, I have come up with this nifty guide to:
HOW TO NOT GOD-MOD OR POWER-PLAY!!
((Just So Ya Know, you don't have to read all this. If you've RP before, there shouldn't be a problem. If you're kinda shaky on all this though, it'd be better if you read it))
First off, what the heck is god-modding and power-playing?
God-modding is when people's characters become invincible, un-hurt-able or perfect.
Power-playing is when one user doesn't give another user a chance to react to the first user's character's actions, or when they control another's character.
Sound confusing? That's okay. We'll explain it better:
Today, for out demonstrations, we will be using the characters Alpha and Omega Each of they're posts will be in that character's color.
God-modding
Example:
**Alpha leaps over his opponent's sword as it flies at him. The young human apprentice snickers and does a double back flip into a tree two feet away. This fight has been going on for hours, but the young boy feels no hesitation or fatigue, and his fighting skills continue to work with the skill of a master.
Okay. Can we see the problem here?
First of all, Alpha is an apprentice. An apprentice or young person can not, we repeat, can not fight with the skill of an older, more experienced person. Act your age! A little kid will be much more naive then and old king, even if he's lived a hard life
Second, this character does a double back flip into a tree. No human can do this! Unless your character has a special power enabling them to do something special, they shouldn't be doing anything extravagant, or impossible.
Finally, he's been fighting for hours and isn't tired. Your characters are only human (so to speak) they aren't gods and will get tired! They will also get hurt or beat up.
A better post:
**Alpha pants and stumbles to dodge his opponent's sword as it flies at him. The young human apprentice winces as the sword only scratches a cut in his shirt. The fight has been going on for hours, and the young boy feels himself becoming tired and making mistakes.
Remember, even buff, strong, mighty Kings in their prime are not invincible. This doesn't mean you have to make your character be weak and lose all the time, but PLEASE: keep it realistic!
Power-Playing
Example:
**Alpha swings towards Omega's stomach again. He laughs out loud as his opponent backs up hurriedly. Then, in quick sequence he runs behind him and thrusts his sword towards Omega's back. Finally, to finish off his attack, he spins around to his opponent's side and swings strongly, grinning as his sword comes away from the swing tainted with his enemy's blood.**
Alrighty. Let's see what's wrong this time!
First, Alpha isn't letting Omega respond. Maybe Omega's user would have had Omega take out his sword and retaliate when Alpha first stuck out at his stomach. This post didn't give the user that opportunity.
Next, it is up to the character's user to decided what that character does, and what happens to them. Maybe Omega's user was going to use his sword to block, not have his character stumble back. In other words, Alpha is controlling his opponent's reactions, which is against the rules!
Last, but hardest to spot, "grinning as his sword comes away from the swing tainted with his enemy's blood." Here, Omega is being controlled by Alpha again. Since the user never had a chance to reply, we don't know that alpha's sword cut him. Maybe Omega is wearing amour, or would have fallen and missed the blow.
A better post:
**Alpha swings towards Omega's stomach again, hoping to cut open his opponent.**
Yes, it's shorted, but it gives Omega time to decide what they're character will do.
If you're confused about this, ask yourself, "Did I allow the opponent the chance to react to my charrie's actions?"
Aaaaand that's all folks!
Thanks for reading, and I hope this has been educational, and helpful. If you have any questions of doubts, don't hesitate to PM me!
~Special thanks to Alpha, Omega, and my Dear friend MOSS!!!~
